How it works

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is calculated by taking the sum of the product of all credits and grade points, then dividing it by the total credits earned across all semesters.

CGPA = Σ(Credit × Grade Point) / Σ(Total Credits)
Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10

Common Questions

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA is calculated for a single semester, while CGPA is the cumulative average of your GPA across all semesters of your academic program.

Which calculation method should I use?

Use Subject-wise if you are calculating for a single semester or if you have a detailed list of all subjects. Use Semester-wise if you already know your GPA for past semesters and want a cumulative summary.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

On a 4.0 scale, divide your CGPA by 4.0 and multiply by 100. For example, a CGPA of 3.6 equals approximately 90%. On a 10-point scale (Indian universities), use the formula: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Always verify with your university's official conversion policy.

What is a good CGPA on a 4.0 scale?

A CGPA of 3.5 or above is excellent (Summa Cum Laude at many institutions). A CGPA between 3.0 and 3.49 is considered good (Cum Laude). Most graduate programmes require a minimum CGPA of 3.0 for admission.

Can I improve my CGPA after a bad semester?

Yes. Since CGPA is a cumulative weighted average, strong performance in future semesters will raise your overall CGPA. Many universities also offer grade replacement policies where retaking a course replaces the original grade in the CGPA calculation.

What Is CGPA and How Does This Calculator Work?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It represents the weighted average of your grade points across all semesters of your academic programme. Unlike a semester GPA, which only reflects one term, CGPA gives a complete picture of your academic trajectory from the first semester to the most recent one.

This free CGPA calculator supports two input methods. The subject-wise method lets you add individual courses with their grades and credit hours — ideal when you want to see how each course contributes to your overall score. The semester-wise method lets you enter the GPA and total credits for each completed semester — faster when you already have semester GPAs from your transcript.

Both methods use the same weighted average formula, so the result is identical regardless of which approach you choose. The calculator also shows your percentage equivalent, making it easy to compare across grading systems.

The CGPA Formula — How It Works

The CGPA formula is a credit-weighted average:

CGPA = Σ(Credit × Grade Point) ÷ Σ(Total Credits)

Example (Semester-wise): You have completed three semesters:

  • Semester 1: GPA 3.8, 16 credits → 3.8 × 16 = 60.8
  • Semester 2: GPA 3.5, 18 credits → 3.5 × 18 = 63.0
  • Semester 3: GPA 3.9, 15 credits → 3.9 × 15 = 58.5

Total weighted points = 182.3. Total credits = 49. CGPA = 182.3 ÷ 49 = 3.72.

How to Improve Your CGPA

1

Focus on high-credit courses. A higher grade in a 4-credit course raises your CGPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit elective.

2

Use grade replacement. Many universities allow you to retake courses. The new grade replaces the old one in CGPA calculations.

3

Plan ahead with this calculator. Enter projected grades for upcoming semesters to see what CGPA you can achieve before results are final.

4

Understand cumulative weight. As you complete more semesters, each new term has less individual impact. Early semesters matter more — start strong.
