Everything You Need to Know About QR Codes

The complete guide to generating, customizing, and using QR codes for business and personal use.

What Is a QR Code and How Does It Work?

A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores data as a matrix of black and white squares. Unlike traditional barcodes that only hold numeric data in one direction, QR codes store up to 7,089 numeric characters or 4,296 alphanumeric charactersin both horizontal and vertical directions, making them capable of encoding URLs, contact details, WiFi credentials, UPI payment addresses, and plain text.

When a smartphone camera scans a QR code, it reads the pattern and decodes the embedded data, redirecting the user to a URL, populating a contact, or connecting to a WiFi network instantly — no app needed on most modern devices.

How to Create a QR Code for a Website URL

  1. Select the URL/Link type in the generator above.
  2. Paste your full URL including https:// in the input field.
  3. Optionally customize the QR color, background, and size.
  4. Click Generate QR Code or Download PNG to save.

QR Code Types Supported

  • URL / Link — Directs scanners to any website. Most common use case.
  • Email — Opens a pre-addressed email compose window on the scanner's device.
  • Phone — Triggers a call to the encoded phone number.
  • SMS — Opens a pre-filled SMS message draft.
  • WiFi — Auto-connects the scanner to your network without typing a password.
  • vCard — Saves a contact card directly to the scanner's address book.
  • UPI / Pay — Opens any UPI payment app pointing to the encoded payment address — ideal for merchants.
  • Plain Text — Displays any custom text message on scan.

What Is Error Correction in QR Codes?

Error correction allows QR codes to remain readable even when partially damaged or obscured. There are four levels:

  • L (Low) — 7% recovery: Smallest data size, best for clean digital screens.
  • M (Medium) — 15% recovery: The default for most use cases, balances size and durability.
  • Q (Quartile) — 25% recovery: Good for printed materials that may get worn.
  • H (High) — 30% recovery: Best for industrial use or when adding a logo overlay. Use this if you enable "Add Logo."

What Size Should a QR Code Be for Print?

The minimum recommended print size for reliable scanning is 2 cm × 2 cm (0.8 in × 0.8 in)at a scanning distance of 20 cm. For banners and posters, scale proportionally:

  • Business cards: 1.5 cm × 1.5 cm minimum
  • Brochures / flyers: 3–4 cm × 3–4 cm
  • Banners / signage: 10–15 cm × 10–15 cm for 1–2 m scanning distance
  • Billboards: Scale up proportionally to viewing distance

Download your QR code as SVG for print — SVG is infinitely scalable without quality loss. Use PNG for digital use at the resolution you need.

Best Practices for QR Code Design

  • Always maintain sufficient contrast between the QR color and background (dark on light or light on dark).
  • Test your QR code with multiple devices before printing at scale.
  • Use error correction level H when adding a logo center — it ensures the code remains scannable despite the logo obscuring some modules.
  • Keep URLs short using a URL shortener to reduce QR complexity and improve scan speed.
  • Add a call-to-action near your QR code: "Scan to order", "Scan to connect", etc.

QR Codes for Business — Common Use Cases

  • Restaurant menus: Link to a digital menu; update it anytime without reprinting the QR.
  • UPI payments: Accept payments at your counter without a card machine.
  • WiFi access: Let customers connect to guest WiFi without sharing the password verbally.
  • Business cards: Encode your vCard so contacts can save your details in one tap.
  • Product packaging: Link to warranty registration, product videos, or support pages.
  • Event tickets: Encode ticket IDs for fast entry scanning at events.
